Hey so

I've been screwing around with the network connecting the communications devices a little. I know there's no Spotify here, no internet, not a lot of music, which sucks. My MP3 player came here with me, so I figured maybe some people might like to have at least a few options. It might not necessarily be to everyone's taste, but it's better than nothing (probably).

I've uploaded the contents to the database, you should be able to access it or send/receive songs at any time.

Turns out they already had some music on there too, so you can poke around theirs and see if you find something you like more. I haven't gotten to go through it all, but at least some of it looks like 21st century Earth stuff.

Sidenote: you're welcome to criticize the contents of my MP3 player, just know that I've never felt shame in my life & I can and will sing all of these karaoke style to your face. IDK if you really want to live through that experience.

I was an engineer. Transitioning into teaching it, actually, but the world kind of ended before I could get my doctorate and go full time. Got an apprenticeship at a firm when I got jumped to 2512, so I picked up a little from there, too. Definitely not a hobbyist.

Would you consider yourself a good engineer?

I'm mostly asking because I do have a robot here. If the time comes that it needs repairs or modifications ... it's a finicky machine, and I want care in handling it, but I'm not proficient enough to do that. In rather crude terms, I'm just the guinea pig for it.

That's a complicated question. I'd consider myself good for 21st century standards, but when we start venturing to future tech I only got to spend a little time in 2512. Even then, that was still a pretty standard Earth setting. When we start incorporating completely foreign, alien technology into the mix...

What I'd like to do, if you don't mind, is get a look at it now while it's functional. If I can understand it while it's working, I have a better chance of fixing it if it breaks. If it's a particularly intricate or complex build, it'll probably take several days for me to map out. Maybe even a couple weeks.

Oh, it's functional. It's finicky and has trust issues, probably inherited from its charming pilot. But it's not alien technology.

When you say trust issues, does it have built-in AI? It's sentient?

I spend most of my time in the engineering corps if you'd like to swing by there, otherwise if you've got a better place I can meet you.

I'm all for "in vino veritas" and all that too, but I don't know how well they'd take alcohol in the space they keep all their children. Not that I'm against it myself, I'm from Italy, but I know there are cultures that aren't very fond of the idea. You'll have to do without your liquid courage.

Ugh, let me guess, you're from the future as well. Or, a future. It's May 2001 for me, Napster's still sort of new. I only know about it because I'm unfortunately invested in getting music that's harder to find in Italy. I heard they were going to release portable mp3s at some point later this year.

It was maybe 2020ish for me back home before the involuntary traveling. MP3s definitely kick off for a while, but eventually everything goes cloud-based. Basically, all the songs are stored on websites or applications that you can just access all the time, all of them, whenever. It's handy, until

But it is a marvelous thing to learn another way these watches can be used, and to have this insight into the development of different cultures. ]

Thank you for sharing your music. It's very different from what I've heard before. I didn't recognize much of what made the music - the sounds are very different.

I don't believe we've named the planet. My country is called Ravka. Are you from an Earth where there are other people here from Earth, or are you from a different Earth?

Well, it's
The same planet for all of us. Mostly the same histories, the same culture, the same cities. Just different versions — for instance, mine got invaded by another species that pretty much took over the planet. That didn't happen to the other people from Earth. It's like the same story, but somebody wrote different endings.

If it doesn't have a name yet, you could always name it after yourself. First person to call it gets it, right?
