Greetings,

You might remember that there was a meeting with the thessyx a few days back. Captain Childe wanted to speak to their representatives, and you don't need me to tell you how important actually making friends with the original inhabitants of this place are, I'm sure.

I won't bore you with the little details - Balthier will just have to tell you himself whether or not he arm wrestled one of the thessyx - but let me tell you about the main points as I heard them from where I was.

[From where he was sitting at the actual table. Obviously implying he snuck in and therefore was not in this conversation is much more fun and importance-free.]

We got answers to some questions - the thessyx aren't shy about any of this, but if you're the shy sort, don't worry, I've got you.

First, as we all know, the shell was full of gifts for the "Children of the Leviathan". That seems to be us.

We, the Children of Leviathan, are the reason they finally came here. Their monarch sensed the psychic impression of the Children of the Leviathan hatching, and since the Children of the Leviathan are the chosen ones of the dragon, and they worship that dragon, they wanted to see us, the Children of the Leviathan, firsthand.

[The dramatic way he's saying Children of the Leviathan is not being expressed in voice-to-text, but it's fine. Repetition will have to do the work.]

Captain Childe wants to negotiate an alliance with the thessyx, and she's willing to let them have access to the basecamp to get it, with some restrictions. For example, no weapons.
But, it seems a lot like the thessyx's main interest with the basecamp isn't the crew, it's us. It'll be worth keeping that in mind in future, but right now, it means Her Captainship is offering to show the thessyx the set-up here, and it might mean they'll help us in return.

Balthier - human, voice like a thunderstorm seducing you, maybe you know him - mostly spoke for the hatchlings during the meeting. Don't worry, he was the perfect gentleman - and mostly steered the conversation back to Captain Childe to do the talking.
I think even without standing on a table and making an inspiring speech, sword held high in the air as a non-existence breeze ripples his shirt-sleeves as I know in my heart he's capable of, Balthier got us some goodwill with the woman in charge around here.

There wasn't exactly time for a Q&A back there, but if the thessyx told you something that's worth sharing, let us all know. If we can gather everything we have about them in one place, it'll help. I've got a few extras of my own as well.

[He has already hit Post before realising that Balthier's voice very definitely reminds him of a close friend...and if he ever told Fenris his voice sounded like a seductive thunderstorm, the broody elf would murder him.]

Hopefully. But I agree; we should at least consider the possibility.

[And there's another issue, but he's not sure who all can see these conversations, so he won't mention that just yet. Instead--]

You said you had some 'extras' to share about conversations with the Thessyx?

[ Balthier is late to the party...he keeps forgetting to check this blasted network thing. ]

Varric's giving me all the credit, while he performed a full ballad for our guests while dancing a traditional number reserved for esteemed guests and monarchs. He grandly bestowed on them a gift from us, a title of "Friends of the Leviathan." They seemed most pleased. Childe didn't murder the two of us. Everyone wins.

I did see a few questions I wanted to address:

-The thessyx were very intent on speaking to me and Varric as members of their "Children of the Leviathan" and had less interest in Childe. I think we need to be careful here -- Childe was not thrilled about this, and I doubt our hosts will be either.
-We didn't have much chance to press them for more answers, but they did not offer an answer to "why now" other than because their leader sensed our presence, and that the dragon is important.
-We did not get a sense of where they came from or if we can get off this planet. However, they seem very amenable to speaking to the Hatchlings. Do share if you find anything.
-This is not, in fact, the first time I have been compared to a sultry thunderstorm.

[ Balthier is also not entirely sure why Childe picked the two of them, but the combination worked out well -- and Varric's a much better storyteller than Balthier.

Balthier wonders if Steve's deeper embedding in an existing social group tipped the decision. Or Balthier not putting his own name in. Either way, he's glad for the positive reception, and he's glad things went smoothly.

Some pirate he's turning out to be, negotiation inter-species treaties. Ashe would be proud. Would Fran? ]

I would confront alien diplomats with you any time, friend. Thought much agreed -- your presence would have been welcome, Rogers.

I figured as much.

This doesn't answer the question, either, but I spoke to a few of them during the banquet. Apparently, they believe those eggs we hatched from were actually laid by the "Leviathan." I would have guessed they were being metaphorical otherwise.

I can't really blame her, considering.

[Childe, that is.]

Yet.

I don't really believe in chosen ones. What happens when we're not who they think we are?

[ interesting. so based on what he's reading here, there's not much the thessyx are offering for now other than titles and ... some measure of friendship. nothing coherent on the table. no demands. they came here after their monarch has sensed a sort of presence that alerted them to the 'children of the leviathan'? so they must be waiting for more signs. ]

They're quite the patient species, the Thessyx.

Why is the dragon important to them? Did they tell you?

[ This being text and all, he's just going to assume that's sarcasm. ]

You'd be surprised by the species I've seen faring through space.

What other conversations do you mean?

Oh, I get a nickname now?

Being armed is always a good precaution in a foreign country. Especially now that we realize we're apparently favoured by default.

No. And thank goodness you aren't, otherwise I'd be worried about our general sanity.

[Pouring one out for local friends @.steve and @.weirdshit. Impeccable sense all around.]

What, really? They think we're chosen ones? When I asked at the "feast" they held, they told me there were no particular legends attached to us.

[Bastards.

Either she asked an ignorant Thessyx, or they lied until the information went to more pertinent Hatchlings.
]

Did they elaborate on that? I know they didn't say what they expect us to do, but surely they used pretty words to describe their beloved chosen ones.

[Though, if they wanted something smote on their behalf, they could ask? Instead of these weird games! Ugh!]

The only other thing I heard was they believe the Leviathan made this world. So, we're "children" of a thing akin to a god. Which is terrible, honestly.

ugh. "children of the leviathan" is so pretentious. at least you don't have to spend half the day saying hatchling.

putting aside that you didn't spare the boring details... so they worship the dragon, they bring us gifts... kinda weird they didn't try to kick the crew out after they started campin out here. hope they don't try to snag any of us for weird dragon cult rituals if we're so special.

The only notable thing they told me is that there haven't ever been other Children of the Leviathan.
So, our arrival is an anomaly even to them. Despite how prepared in custom they seemed for it.

Perhaps there's some kind of prophecy they want us to fulfill.

I reached the same conclusion. They speak psychically and I have no guess on their lifespan other than much longer than mine.

The dragon seems to have something to do with their religion. I believe they worship it, but I'm unclear on the details -- I don't know how long it's been dead, or what their psychic connection is to it. They said they felt our arrival.

-if saltiness could kill me I'd have died a long time ago

-mundane personal questions. how I keep my hair so lush and shiny, for instance. also what my home is like, what kind of person I am, any deeds I've done. I don't think they know why we were specifically chosen either.

That's my understanding -- no particular legends attached to the hatchlings, but plenty to the dragon. I think you are correct that they see it as a god.

[ He's seen gods among men go south before. Trish has a point, even if she's very reactive about it. ]

They were alerted to our presence through their psychic link, and came on behalf of their queen. I am not convinced that they know why we came now or what is happening with the dragon.

I had reached a similar conclusion. I don't think they mean us harm, but I think there's something we're missing. Prophecies can make us attractive, but they can also make us heathens when we don't do what they want.

It's possible the legs were laid before it died, in which case, we may be bracing for the others to hatch. I'm not sure more displaced hatchlings makes anything about our situation better.

[ 'they felt our arrival', 'they speak psychically' ... creepy ]

Haha, well. I hope that's something that's just within their own species. It'd be a strange thing to be monitored in ways we can't predict.
portolan: (h a n d y)

[personal profile] portolan 2021-06-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not clear how much they are able to link with us. There's some concern that the strange dreams and lavender marks some hatchlings had were related to the thessyx.

Certainly something to keep an eye on.
